The Beginning of ROOTKey
ROOTKey is a Portuguese digital security startup founded in 2022 and headquartered in Campo Grande, Lisbon. Created by Gonçalo Gil (CEO) and LuĂs Costa (CTO), the company originated in a small university apartment in Felgueiras, in the Porto district. It was there that Gonçalo and LuĂs realized that by combining their efforts, they could solve digital security problems. With data security as a primary focus, ROOTKey uses blockchain technology to protect data, ensuring authenticity, integrity, and ownership of information.
ROOTKey's story traces back to this modest university apartment in Felgueiras, where Gonçalo and LuĂs, driven by their passion for cybersecurity, identified an opportunity to address critical challenges in digital security. In the early days, they used the apartment’s bathroom as an improvised data center and later turned the kitchen into a space to develop the first iterations of their technology. Over time, they refined their solutions and established processes that culminated in the development of a robust platform.
About the Founders
Gonçalo Gil, CEO of ROOTKey, is a young visionary in the field of cybersecurity, whose passion began at the age of 14. During his academic journey, he actively participated in digital security competitions (bug bounties), excelling in challenges at both national and international levels. He is currently recognized globally as one of the Top 1,000 ethical hackers on the TRYHACKME platform, which boasts over 2 million community members. In Portugal, he ranks among the Top 10 ethical hackers in the country, solidifying his position as one of the most skilled professionals in the domain of digital security.
LuĂs Costa, CTO of ROOTKey, is a professional with a strong aptitude for technology and a focus on problem-solving. A graduate in Computer Network Security, he holds relevant certifications, including “NFT Certified Developer” from the Blockchain Council and “Reactive Architecture” from IBM.
The combination of Gonçalo Gil’s strategic, problem-identifying vision and LuĂs Costa’s analytical, solution-driven approach has resulted in a solid and complementary partnership essential for ROOTKey's development and growth.
